A cheque is a written document instructing a bank or building society to debit your account and pay someone. You can pay money in and out of your account with a cheque.
In-line with industry best practice, cheques that are paid into or written from your account are usually honoured for up to 6 months. However, although they’re honoured for up to 6 months, they’re legally valid for up to 6 years.
What would I use it for? Typically cheques are used to pay bills, tradesmen who come to the house or to pay a friend or another person face-to-face. An Online, Mobile or Telephone Banking payment may be a quicker more convenient way to pay in many cases. You can write a personal cheque to a business or an individual for any amount, but it's up to you to make sure you have enough money in your account to allow the payment to go through.
