All about recurring payments

Paying your bills/subscriptions using a recurring payment is convenient and has its advantages but it's very different from using a Direct Debit or regular payment. Here's all you need to know about recurring payments.

What is a recurring payment?

What is a recurring payment?

A Recurring Transaction (or “continuous payment authority”) is where you have provided a company with your Visa debit or credit card details and consented to them taking regular payments from your account.

This way of making payments is different from a Direct Debit or Standing Order as it is set up by you directly with the company concerned, without the involvement of your bank or building society. (It is not covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee scheme)

Companies may request you to pay in this way where payments can be made by instalments, for example monthly or annually. Typically recurring transactions are used for insurance policies, car breakdown cover or magazine and TV subscriptions.

Recurring payments can be cancelled any time up to close of business on the day before the payment is due to be made. You can cancel them online (see below), over the phone or in branch.

What happens next

Your request may not immediately stop further payments being taken from your account.  Where a company continues to take payments from your account after we know you have withdrawn your consent, we will refund that money to you.

We would recommend that you also contact the company directly to make them aware that you have cancelled the payment, because this payment arrangement may be part of a contract between you and them for the service you requested, and you will want to be sure that they know that this is no longer required.

This policy applies to all our debit, cash card and credit card customers.
